Cardiovascular disease is the #1 killer worldwide. It affects all genders, ages, income brackets, cultures, and religions. Surgeries and treatments are expensive, easily costing tens of thousands of dollars.
More than twenty-five years ago Federico Alfaro, MD, a Guatemalan physician, was treating a seventeen-year-old patient with a curable heart condition, where the heart slows until it just stops pumping. Dr. Alfaro desperately tried to find financial assistance to provide the boy with a pacemaker, but in the end he had to watch the boy die. At that moment, he swore another countryman would not die because they could not afford a pacemaker.
And so our mission was born. Heartbeat International Foundation, Inc. saves lives globally by providing cardiovascular implantable devices (such as pacemakers) and treatment at no charge to indigent patients of the world. Over the years, working with a network of medical manufacturers and local doctors and hospitals in more than 25 developing countries, we have saved over 10,000 lives, lives that would otherwise perish.
Our vision is to expand Heartbeat International’s mission to include robust programs in Education, Prevention and Treatment, as we strive to combat cardiovascular disease worldwide with the support of individuals, corporations, and global strategic alliances with other like-minded organizations. Our global movement has the momentum to take its message around the world. We hope to one day say…
“No one on this planet will ever die as a result of needing a life-saving pacemaker device
and simply not being able to afford it”
This is our promise. This is why Heartbeat International exists.
