Heartbeats for Laree
Organized by: Friends of Laree
In May 2014, she put horses in the pasture and hours later awoke in a field on the side of a road with her English Shepherd, Scout, protecting her. This was the first indication something was very wrong. Laree Shulman, well known in the English Shepherd (ES) community, needs our help.
It was not apparent how seriously ill Laree was at the time. Doctors said she had pneumonia, but when her illness dragged on for months, it became clear something else was going on. Additional tests showed Laree had a virus wreaking havoc and damaging her heart, resulting in heart failure.
Laree is a longtime Doberman Pinscher breeder and in recent years fell in love with English Shepherds. She would do anything for the breed. You can find her volunteering everywhere, from selling raffle tickets at the NC ES Gathering to coordinating ES Calendar mailings to acting as AHBA trial secretary to fostering English Shepherds in need. Giving of herself tirelessly, doing any and everything-in-between, Laree has taught a wonderful lesson and will often remind us, "People want to help! Let them!"
A heart pump will be implanted to keep Laree's heart working while she awaits a heart transplant. She has been put on the Heart Transplant list at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C. Though she has health insurance, paying for surgeries and medication is going to be difficult, at best. Her medication alone will cost $3000 per month, over and above what insurance covers.
Hoping to tap into the generosity of Laree’s many friends and the ES community, we have created this donation campaign and planned several fundraisers to help with Laree’s health expenses. We hope to raise $10,000 to cover 3 months' medications for Laree.
Since Laree has been such a big part of the NC ES Gatherings for the past several years, some of the fundraisers will take place there in October; others will be available online for anyone who would like to participate. All the proceeds from the special fundraising activities — which will include a 2015 ES calendar dedicated to Laree (featuring photos from NC ES gatherings), a custom designed “heart dog” English Shepherd t-shirt, and an auction and raffle at the gathering — will go to Laree. We would also love to collect stories, photos, and well-wishes from all of you (email to firstname.lastname@example.org), to give to Laree along with the financial support.
Thank you so much for helping us help Laree.
