BENEFITING: Heartshare St. Vincent's Services, Inc.
EVENT DATE: Aug 15, 2016
Education is one of our greatest rights and resources. Our society relies on education for ameliorating the conditions, promoting the virtues, and advancing the happiness of its people. However, when the 51% of students are considered to live in a low-income family, it becomes apparent that many schoolchildren cannot afford basic necessities for success. In fact, low-income students are graduating 15% behind their other peer groups nationwide
HeartShare St. Vincent's Services (HSVS) is dedicated to ensuring that youth in their care beat the odds and break through to success. HSVS knows that it is not enough to only provide the basics for our young people. With access to high quality, stimulating education, many of the racial inequalities and systemic barriers young people face will be eradicated.
Help HeartShare St. Vincent's Services (HSVS) in its efforts to close the opportunity gap and ensure these students have the resources and supports they need to stay on track to graduation and succeed.
Pack 1 full backpack for a student:
- Elementary School: $50
- Middle School: $100
- Highschool: $150
HSVS' commitment to education is evident in the American Dream Program (ADP), its privately funded college scholarship and coaching program.
Through ADP, youth in foster care are connected with a full-time staff member, their “academic parent,” who ensures that each youth receives emotional support, college counseling, academic support and financial assistance. A post-secondary degree is crucial for these youth to break out of the cycle of poverty and break through to success, and the supports from ADP ensure youth in HSVS' care persist through college and graduate. Currently, 36 youth are enrolled in college and another 15 students will begin college in the Fall 2016/Spring 2017 semesters, which is 34% of the 150 college-age youth who are currently in the care of HSVS.
Help us support those students enrolled in the American Dream Program by providing:
- A semester of books: $300
- Care packages throughout the year: $500
- A dorm room: $1000
- A students full-year, non-tuition needs: $5000
HeartShare St. Vincent's Services empowers the youth, individuals and families it serves to overcome the challenges of family crises, addiction, mental illness and poverty. By offering a safe place to go after school, a means to graduate college and the skills to achieve physical and mental well-being, HSVS creates opportunities for those who need it most.
