I've always loved to read and write. My parents would tell you they could usually find me with my nose in a book. I spent summers absorbing book after book - sometimes reading late into the night under my bed cover with a flashlight. I started writing creatively in grade school - at first short stories, then poetry. Ultimately it was poetry that gave me an outlet through which to express my hopes dreams and cope with personal loss at a very young age.
I selected 826michigan not only because of my passion and talent for writing, but because of my firm belief in the power of the creative arts in child development. This belief has become more pronounced with the birth of first child, Max Ava. My hope is that she will grow up with the same fervor for reading and writing that me and her father have. That she will embrace her imagination and express it creatively through the arts .
I was first introduced to 826michigan through one of their sister chapters - 826 Valencia in San Francisco or as we fondly called it, the "Pirate Supply Store". So unique and fun, it was a frequent stop on our tour of the neighborhood for friends and family visiting from out of town.
When I moved to Michigan in 2013 and discovered that our city, Ann Arbor, had their own "826", I was thrilled. Whether you're selling supplies for robots or pirates, the founding principles of the programs they deliver are still the same - to help student's develop core writing skills while encouraging imagination and creativity.
Get Involved: Donations are very much appreciated, as is a commitment to volunteer. Volunteers serve as ambassadors to the community, mentors to students, and technicians to the robots. From inspiring students to get excited about writing right in their classroom to having a light-bulb moment where you help a student “get” fractions at tutoring, to copyediting one of our student publications, everything you do as an 826michigan volunteer feeds into the creation of a vibrant and wildly inspired safe place for young people.
