As most of you know, I have been enjoying triathalons and/or running for most of my life.
The night before my second Ironman in Maryland, at 10:30 p.m., when my nerves were at their peak, my loving daughter decided it was time for an emergency appendectomy! As I sat the next morning staring at her in her hospital bed, so glad that she was OK and so frustrated that I spent 7 months training for an appendectomy, I realized Karma was trying to tell me something.
When Karma talks its best to listen...So I decided to put my love for the sport to good use and race for a charity. I previously partnered up with Ironman Foundation and committed to raise $6000 for their charity. It was an amazing experience! The team raised an incredible amount of money for impoverished families to assist them with food, travel costs to and from the local YMCA and to teach them to swim. We came to learn that there was a disproportionately high amount of children in those families that did not know how to swim and unfortunately drowned to death. Helping them was so amazing! It really made the race more enjoyable for us and we thought about every time we felt like giving up.
This time, we want to give directly to children in need and with medical issues much more serious than what we experienced. We are partnering up with the Ronald McDonald House. I am sure most of you know, that they assist families and children who are ill and need medical assistance by providing lodging for the whole family while the child is receiving medical attention at a NYC hospital at no cost (or a donation of merely $35 per night). This enables the families to "stay together and heal together" and is such a critical part of a child's healing process. Every child should have their family surrounding them with love and support when they are ill. Having the opportunity to provide this very basic necessity of lodging to these families is my honor.
I can run on my own, but I could use some help meeting my fundraising goal. Please do not feel that you have to donate- there is no pressure at all! But if you were going to make any charitable donations this year, why not donate to the children and families who really need it?
The training takes on a whole new enjoyment for me now that I am trying to raise money for children who are ill! What better cause could there possibly be?
