BENEFITING: Willie Mae Rock Camp For Girls Inc
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2011
Everyone always asks, "Where are the women in rock?" and "Why are there so few female rock guitarists, bassists, and drummers?" Well, the Willie Mae Rock Camp is trying to change that. They run week-long summer camps each year that culminate in a concert, as well as ongoing classes and private lessons throughout the year. (Think "School of Rock," but for girls only!) This is such an amazing organization. I only wish they were around when I was a kid! Who knows? Maybe I could have become the next Jerry Garcia instead of a boring musicologist! In all seriousness, music changed my life--saved me, in many ways--and I'd like to help other little girls find themselves through music.
Please consider donating to this important cause!
More about Willie Mae:
The Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls is a Brooklyn-based non-profit music and mentoring program dedicated to the empowerment of girls and women. They offer life-changing rock music lessons and band coachings for girls and women. Most importantly to me, both the summer camp and the after-school programs are available on a sliding scale for those who can't afford the full tuition. That's awesome.
