Ainsley's Angels of America is super excited to be spreading awareness through activism and to celebrate Heather! We asked her husband to provide a paragraph about what getting a chair for Heather would mean to them. Here is his reply:
We saw Ainsley's Angels at the Abilities Expo convention in Houston, TX and tried out one of the racing wheelchairs, and it was an amazing dream come true! My wife was a teacher working with special needs children in wheelchairs, but went paralyzed, to learn she has a rare lifelong condition, Chiari, which is causing cysts to develop inside her spinal cord, Syringomyelia. She also has EDS and POTS which are genetic degenerative disorders that also affect her mobility & daily living greatly, forcing her into a wheelchair. Heather misses running and being active very much, especially since as newlyweds, we would spend time together going for long walks. This is very dear to our hearts as Heather went paralyzed at 29 years old, when she was just training for a triathlon running miles a day, to encourage her family and friends to be healthier with her. We were inspired by the Hoyt Racing Team and have done races before with her regular wheelchair, which is painful for her due to it not being made to go faster than a walking speed, so this will be a HUGE help! In fact, after riding in one of the specially built chairs, we both cried, and Heather did not want to get out of the chair, as it was something we both missed. It made her feel like she could run again, and it tore my heart to have to leave the show without one of these chairs and deny her that. We want to start fundraising for her chair that way she has something positive in her life to look forward to as she faces brain surgery to correct the brain and spine issues, and all of these drastic life changes as a young women. You can see more of her story here: https://www.youcaring.com/heatherdeaton-871514 here is the local news story that they recently did on my wife as well: http://kfdm.com/news/local/diagnosis-changes-nederland-womans-life
