In 1998 I entered the doors of Brigham & Women's Hospital barely able to walk a mile. I couldn't tie my own shoes and had difficulty swallowing food. My hands and face were so tight I could barely function. Then I met Dr. Peter Schur, who with one look said, "You have Scleroderma", something many of the doctors before him couldn't diagnose. Flash foward to 2017, since his care I have completed a half marathon, I'm at a healthy weight and my once tight hands now create jewelry. It was then I knew the importance of proper care. I have to give a shout out to my amazing family and friends, who never gave up on me. I'm so grateful for the ability to live a normal life. I've met other patients with Scleroderma, who can't make themselves a simple bowl of cereal. I run to honor Dr. Schur and my team of awesome doctors. I hope to raise awareness for this awful disease that takes the lives of many each year. May each step I take give hope for a cure.
