In just 11 months, we endured nine fires that claimed six house installations. We have lost staff members, gained dark circles, and spent countless hours refocusing the HP as a community organization beyond the art. Those watching our recovery closely have reminded us that we've survived a trauma, and have done so with our integrity and passion intact. While we are proud to say that we've made it through, the new reality of life after the fires stings anew.
From security planning to clean up efforts, the fires were an enormous set back in terms of staff resources, ultimately leading to this year's cancellation of our annual Fall Fundraiser. As things finally returned to normal at our offices, it became very clear that it wasn't just our staff that was drained. Despite the thousands of dollars contributed through Indiegogo and the money, services, and equipment that was donated by foundations and contractors alike, the solar powered security system drained our bank accounts, too.
The fact is, Non-Profits don't have back up plans or emergency reserves.
Our supporters have shown us that the work we do is important. Our critics, though under-informed, have taught us that non-profits are confusing. That's okay. As much as we love to have fun, we are taking a serious approach to RiseDetroit, we'll call it ruthless transparency. From finances to staff members, we hope you'll take this opportunity to learn about our every day, why we do what we do, and why we can't continue our work without your help. Even if, in the end, you don't want to help us win this challenege, hopefully you'll be reminded why non-profits are worthy of your support. #SupportDetroit
