Heifer International believes there is no development strategy more beneficial to society than one that involves women as central players, and simultaneously engages men in a more accepting view of women’s participation. Worldwide, women are the backbone of agriculture and the key driver of food production. Although women own less than one percent of the earth’s land, they produce a staggering 80 percent of the developing world’s food.
Since 1944 Heifer International has worked to end hunger and poverty while caring for the Earth. Heifer provides livestock and environmentally sound agricultural training to improve the lives of those who struggle daily for reliable sources of food and income. Through this work Heifer has helped 18.5 million families. Participating families can now send children to school, pay medical bills and, move from dependence on aid and charity to economic independence.
Gender equality plays a central role in the success of Heifers projects. In order for a family to lift themselves out of poverty, men and women must work side by side with equally respected roles and responsibilities. Heifer confronts issues of patriarchy and gender inequity head-on when we begin working with communities. By giving animals and resources directly to women, they are able to gain status not only in their families but also their society. By becoming the owners of livestock, and the resulting businesses, women are able to earn an income for their family.
We ask you to join Heifer —to help us celebrate the successes of women who have joined us in their journey beyond hunger and to help countless others achieve their dreams of hope, happiness, opportunity and prosperity. In a world where too many women feel powerless, you, we, have the power through a simple gift to help them change their circumstances, their fate and their family’s future.
