Heifers for Peace
Organized by: Connor Mullins
This fundraiser is an expansion of an Experiment in Social Philanthropy begun by the Good Misfit project last summer. The idea is to bring together 60 people from around the globe in the effort to raise a collective $30,000 for a charity. Each person will be responsible for raising $500 during the month of September.

The charity we will be fundraising for this year is Children Peace Initiative Kenya - a group that looks to build inter-communal peace in Kenya. They accomplish this goal by bonding the children through camps and group excercises. This helps build friendship amongst peoples from different areas at a young age. These children then bond their families, which then in turn build trade relations and help better their respecitve communities.
Our fundraiser will provide 400 heifers to families that have been bonded by CPI Kenya programs. Each Heifer will be co-owned by two families - each from a different village. The costs and benefits of raising the heifers will be shared between the families, and the offspring will be donated - continuing the impact of the program.
A key element of this fundraiser is that the co-ownership of the heifer helps dramatically reduce livestock raids between communities. Before the implementation of CPI Kenya's Friendship for Peace program, there were an average of 10-15 cattle raids taking place each year (with each raid resulting in the loss of livestock and averaging 5-10 deaths, with extreme cases of up to 30 deaths).
Since the program's implementation however, there have been no reported livestock raids in the areas CPI Kenya is working in. Our Heifers for Peace program helps provide an incentive to maintain this peace, as well as increasing the standards of living for those involved.
