Helena Bike Tower Sculpture Project
Organized by: Emily Gluckin
The Helena Bike Tower was born out of the desire to create new and unique Public Art in Helena while finding a way to incorporate our city’s unique biking culture. The Helena Bike Tower will take the most iconic structure, the Fire Tower, and recreate it using donated bicycle parts from community members. The process began with a visioning process and an artist rendering. From there, the final location for the Bike Tower to be constructed was selected at the south end of the Great Northern Town Center in Downtown Helena. A community call for bikes was held in May 2015, resulting in hundreds of bikes and bike stories. Bikes were stripped in November 2015 and painted between January and March 2016. The structural drawings, foundation and steel framework were completed in May 2016. Next steps include more fundraising, bolting the steel tower structure to the concrete foundation, attaching the painted bikes to the tower structure, adding signage, lighting, bike rack and landscaping.
