So I came across this term that I thought was interesting—Stacktivism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slacktivism). Most of us probably are considered “slacktivists” but I think it’s with valid reason. We work 8+ hours a day and can't devote that much of our time for volunteering, protesting, boycotts, rallies, etc. I don't know this person who coined the slacktivist term but I already dislike him/her because I know s/he is negative. Negativity gets you nowhere. While we don't have the luxury of time to devote ourselves to great causes but it doesn't mean we can't be supportive of them. The best way to show your support when you can't be there in person is by donating. It doesn't have to be a lot-- just whatever you can afford. "Every individual matters. Every individual has a role to play. Every individual makes a difference... It's up to us to save the world for tomorrow; it’s up to you and me." --Jane Goodall.
There are a lot of criticisms against social networking sites and I agree that it can be stupid. But it can also be a platform for something amazing. So Edward Norton, a brilliant artist and savvy philanthropist came up with this social networking site called Crowdrise where the purpose is not to tell people when you are in line at Starbucks, but a place you can share your passions with your friends and earn money for great organizations in the process. If you are only doing a good deed for recognition from your friends or to feel good about yourself-- that's ok! You should feel good about yourself if you helped out the world! But also realize that it ought to be our duty to help out our world. We humans have destroyed so much of this world already. We need pull our efforts to help repair it.
As you can see from my projects, I’m passionate about animals and the environment. Why do I care about the welfare of animals when there is so much human suffrage in the world that is more important? Because I don’t feel one cause is more important than the other. I don’t feel that humans are above animals. We are all God’s creatures and we are equal. I commend all types of activism but one person can’t do everything. Pick a few causes that you feel most strongly about—and fight for them the best you can.
I hope that everyone of you will create a Crowdrise account and we can become friends. Let us support each other’s causes and have fun while doing it!
