Nyadoi Hellen is an unemployed single mother of 7 living in Kampala, Uganda. Her and her family currently live in a small, single room in the slums of Kamwanyi which she dearly hopes to leave one day.
“Its not a good place to raise children. The children fall sick here often. Theres too much drinking, too much immorality like thieves and prostitutes around”. –Hellens Eldest Daughter
Hellen wishes to start up a business selling charcoal, which was her profession previously until thieves stole her profits and forced her out of business. She already has the connections to begin again, all she needs now is the start up capital.
“Life is hard. Naturally, its through struggle. Everything…school fees, food, clothes, everything is hard. Treating them….oh. Everything. I cant hide that I cant afford this. What I get, its only for rent. My children ask for their needs, which is also hard. Nobody can help them, they are only seeing me.” -Hellen
Hellen and her family would be endlessly grateful for any support they can receive so that she can be able to support her family and get her children what they need.
“Anyone who can help support us, send them my prayer. Anyone that helps me, let them be provided for and let them live a long life”. -Hellen
Breakdown of start up capital needed:
Selling charcoal is in high demand because the main method of cooking is with a charcoal stove. Since Hellen is located in the city, she has to transport charcoal in from an outside village and then distribute within the city. Every two weeks she will transport the standard amount for this type of business which is a truckload containing 100 bags of charcoal. The prices listed below are based on the current rates according to a dear friend of Hellens working the same type of business.
1) 1 bag charcoal- 25000 UGX (Ugandan Shillings) ($7.35)
2) Labor per bag (packing, offloading, loading)- 6000 UGX ($1.76)
3) NFA fee per bag- 2000 UGX ($0.59)
4) Transport per bag- 15000 UGX ($4.41)
5) Feeding and transport while in village- 100,000 UGX ($29.41)
Total per bag- 48000 UGX ($14.12) x100 = 4,800,000 UGX
Total per 100 bags- ($1,411.76)
Accommodation and travel on job= 100,000 UGX ($29.41)
Total Start Up Capital Needed: 4,900,000 UGX ($1441.17)
Once this capital is obtained and she begins, the total profit earned per bag is around 7000-8000 UGX ($2.05-$2.45) per bag, which means every two weeks her profit would be ($205.88 - $235.29). In Uganda, this amount is more than enough to be able to pay rent in a bigger home, pay school fees for all of her children, buy food, clothes and treatment when the kids get sick.
