God woke me up at 2:00 a.m. this week and Haiti was on my heart. This is completely random because I have no association with Haiti and although I have a heart for missions, Haiti has never been of interest to me. My employer takes a group of missionaries every summer, but I have never thought twice about going to Haiti. So, I tried to fall back asleep and laid in bed wide awake in prayer for the next two hours. "God, are you really calling me to Haiti? I am a foster mom to three, my husband is in school and I have a job and not enough vacation hours to even go." God said, "you are going to Haiti this summer, get ready".
Completely taken back, I kept it to myself, drove to work and continued to pray. I sent an email to the organizer of the trip at my work and told her what happened. This was her response,
Wow! We just had a spot open up on our team yesterday because one of our students backed out. Also, we only have one staff person and we were hoping to have the spot filled by another adult!
I also immediately found out I wouldn't have to use vacation and when I told my husband, he was completely supportive. So...... here I go off to Haiti.
I know the Lord will provide financially. So, I asked that you pray if this is something you can financially support. I do not know how God is going to use me this summer or work in my heart, but I do know without any doubts that this is where he wants me.
During my time in Haiti I will be partnering with partners in development (www.pidonline.org), a local nonprofit in Blanchard which is right outside of Port au Prince. The main focus of our trip is construction. We work alongside local Haitians to build cinder block homes for families in need. PID also has a medical clinic on site so nursing students volunteer in several capacities. There may also be an opportunity to help out with children's activities. :)
