What is it for? We are a few friends who are raising funds to privately sponsor two young Syrians to settle in Toronto. The fund will cover the costs of their first year in Canada including their housing, food, clothing, transportation, and unexpected expenses such as mental health counselling (if needed). Our online fundraising goal is $20,000. Who are you helping? Waed(25) and Hamzeh(13) are siblings. The family was displaced for over 3 years since the time their hometown Darayya(suburb of Damascus) faced a massacre in 2012. They were lucky enough to flee the city just in time. The next town they resided in was relatively safe for a while but then the bombing, kidnapping and recruiting for military started. Waed was sexually harassed at a checkpoint and Hamzeh stopped going to school for the fear of bombing and recruitment. They managed to escape Syria and get to their uncle in Lebanon 3 months ago; however, they are unable to work and go to school, and face discrimination for being Syrian refugees. Their uncle, a refugee himself, doesn’t have the money to support them. Hamzeh has been going through a tough time, is malnourished, traumatized and have difficulty walking. We are hoping to help them enjoy the life they deserve but were denied. Why Waed and Hamzeh? Two of us have privately sponsored Mariam, one of Waed’s and Hamzeh’s sisters, who arrived in Toronto in February 2016. She is an amazing young woman who has come a long way in her five months in Canada. Despite all the hardship she has been through, she is a cheerful, funny person with a determination of building her life here. However, her full integration will not start until she is reunited with her brother and sister. What’s next? There is a good chance that their refugee application will be approved. We have a backup plan though. If for any reason their application is not approved, the donation will be sent to them in Lebanon to help them support themselves. The remainder of the fund will be donated to a refugee family who are coming to Canada.
