Help Amber Nerd-Out the Mansion (Archives)!
Organized by: Fernando Bolivar
Dear Friends, Family, and Colleagues of Amber Batura:
As many of you know, Amber has been working on a pretty cool dissertation for her Ph.D. in History from Texas Tech University. If you're asking yourself how the heck a history dissertation can be "cool", I'll just let you know that the topic involves the Vietnam War, Women's Rights, Feminism, racial-issues in the 1960's and how Playboy Magazine helped push society forward in those areas. It's a super cool topic and I love listening to Amber talk about it! Although I've only been to one history conference, I've seen people line the walls of a room just to watch her research presentation. That's pretty impressive!
Although Amber has spent countless hours reading, researching, and interviewing people, she finally got through to Playboy and they've decided to open their (very private) archives and give her access to the ultimate research source she needs to continue working on (and someday finish) her dissertation. In fact, they're giving her access for an entire week... but only if she can get to Los Angeles at the end of August.
WHY ARE WE CROWD FUNDING?
As a full-time, graduate student Amber works on campus and teaches, but it only pays the bills and tuition. Even though she was granted some travel funds through the department, it's only enough to cover the flight. She needs our help to cover costs: a place to stay nearby, meals, and transportation costs, like Uber from the airport to wherever she's staying.
The biggest, uncovered cost for this trip is lodging. We found a few places on AirBNB that are only blocks away and renting for a week costs between $600-700, depending on how quickly we book. Hotels are pretty much out of the question since the cheapest, safe places are over $1000 and not very close. And, I don't want Amber staying in 1-star motel with a 1-star customer rating that will still cost $600. I mean, it's LA, so I want to know she's safe from all the crazy California things we hear about in Texas. :D
Also, Uber costs will easily exceed $100 over the course of a week and the less than $200 remaining will hopefully provide a few meals since she'll have to eat out most meals. Oh, and coffee, she'd probably choose coffee over food, but we don't want to risk her being grouchy. (Love you, Ber!) :P
(The $31 is to cover the cost of crowd funding, to make sure she has $1000 after the 3% fee.)
WHAT DO YOU GET OUT OF THIS?
A telepathic/virtual/real hug and a giant "thank you" from the bottom of Amber's heart and the hearts of those who love her, support her, and are proud of seeing her succeed. Who knows, she might even send you a postcard from the Mansion or LA!
If you can help, thank you so much for your generosity, love and support! Please, share this with your friends and ask them to help, since we know Amber doesn't like asking for it, but we all want to watch her succeed. :D
