THE STORY:

70 pupils, many who lost their parents to HIV, face a future without education. Please support us to bring young Barack Obama and his classmates in school by repairing the school bus. WHAT IS THE FUTURE WE ARE CREATING? Rusinga island is based in the south West of Kenya. With a 40% HIV infection rate, a generation of children are growing up without support and the necessary income to access basic primary education. We see a future where children living here have the opportunities to learn, play, remain healthy and fulfill their potential by attending school. Without the school, due to rampant levels of poverty and the impact of HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, the majority of our pupils would not be in a position to access education at all. Now the school is in place, but many children are walking long distances (averagely 12 kms) every day to school. When they are in school, they sometimes lack food and other necessities so they can stay in school. The Alekii and Islanders Centre Kenya schoolS (www.alekii.webs.com and www.childhopeacademy.webs.com) for children aged 4-9 is run by a committee of local (Kenyan) educators and community workers who up until now have been funding the project themselves through their own donations and welcoming international volunteers to teach at the school. The two schools has one bus that normally transport the children to school, the bus is used for public transport to bring an income so the profit can help maintain the school. The bus is now broken down and need mechanical repair. The bus, has been helping the school through the following areas;- • Transporting the children to the education tour • Transporting the children to and from school every day • Generating income to finance the school expenses e.g paying the staff, buying books, buying food as well as other necessities like uniform, shoes and books. WHAT AND WHY WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT? Barack Obama is a young boy aged 7 years and is in year three at Islanders Centre. Obama has a brother Victor who is also 10 years old. They are orphans who is walking 10 kms every day to school. Barack is an intelligent boy in class. Like most young children who doesn’t have good basic care, Obama and his brother find it hard to live a comfortable life Like Obama and Victor, many children at Islanders School find themselves in difficult situation when now the school bus is broken down. They cant reach school on time as well has have basic needs in school since they cant pay. It will cost US $3500 to repair the school bus engine and the bus to be back on the road. The bus, shall help Obama and his other schoolmate to enjoy the comfort of school life as well as get basic needs like food and clothing.
