Help Bring My Dad Home
Organized by: Penni Vary
Hello Everyone My Name Is Kelsey Vary, Youngest Daughter Of William J. Vary. On September 27th, 2015 My Father Was Admitted To Mary Greeley Hospital In Ames, Ia For Being Dilusional, and Also He Had Looked Like He Was Beat Up. The Last We Had Heard From Him Was The Morning Of September 26th When He Was Riding His Bike On His Way To Work. My Mother Received A Call From The ER Saying She Needed To Rush To The Hospital That Things Weren't Looking Good For My Dad. He Had Fallen From His Bike Riding Back Home From Work, He Was Found By An Anonymous Person Who Had Taken Him To The Place He Was Living Where They Called The Ambulance. Upon Arrival To The Hospital He Was Put In A Medical Induced Coma So His Body Wouldn't Stress Anymore Than It Was, And For Further Testing. Test Results Showed Two Strokes, Multi Organ Failure And A Disease Called Rhabdomyosis, Which Is Muscles Throwing Toxins To The Body From Muscles Dying or Breaking Down. They Believe The Stokes Were Caused From A Blood Clot Thrown From His Mechanical Heart Valves. He Was In A Coma For 8 Weeks And Every Test They Had Done Involving The Brain Showed That My Dad Was Brain Dead, Doctors Gave Us No Hope At All And Recommended Hospice. My Dad Now Had A Tracheotomy, A Gastric Tube Feeding Him, And A Catheter. While In A Coma My Dad Went Into Cardiac Arrest And Hadn't Moved A Muscle Since That Day. We Still Had No Hope. On November 11th Two Days After My Sons Second Birthday We Were Suppose To Move My Dad To Hospice, But On November 11th My Dad Moved His Arm And Tried To Pull Out The Trache. Our First Reaction Was To Cancel Hospice Out All Together And That's Just What We Did. All Test Still Showed No Brain Waves, Or Activity At All, But We All Still Had Faith. I Had Researched Brain Rehabilitation Centers Where My Dad Could Go To Get Help. All Medicines Keeping My Dad In A Coma Were Shut Off, But Still After Two Weeks There Were No Signs Of Him Awakening Besides His Eyes Being Open And Wandering And Movement Of One Arm. On November 18th 2015 My Dad Was Transferred To A Place Called On With Life In Ankeny, Iowa. The First Day He Arrived They Dressed Him, And Put Shoes On Him, Made Him Look Like Himself Again Just Very Mal-Nutritioned. Since Being At On With Life My Dad Has Began To Talk, Remember His Immediate Family, And Joins Daily Activities. He Is Learning To Live Again. My Dad Is Currently In A Wheelchair and Cannot Walk, Has Short-Term Memory Loss. He Had The Tracheotomy Removed, The Gastric Tube Feeding Him Removed, And Also The Catheter. He Is Still In-Continent, And Now Needs To Be Fed Purée Food. He Has Tremors In His Entire Body Which Causes Him To Be Very Shakey. He Also Gets Very Frustrated Very Easy Due To Not Being Able To Communicate As Easy As It Use To Be. He Has Troubles Finding The Words He Wants To Say And Confuses Lots Of Words With Others. My Dad Is Still Recovering And Still Has A Along Way To Go, But Insurance Is Not Wanting To Pay For My Dad To Be At On With Life Any Longer Only Outpatient Therapies And A Promise To My Dad Was If He Survived All Of This And Came Out Of The State He Was In And Stayed Strong For His Family We Would Make Sure He Would Come Home! We Are Asking For Help For Us To Be Able To Bring Him Home Where His Wife, My Mother Penni Vary Has Fully Commited To Taking Care Of My Father For The Rest Of Their Lives. Expenses We Are Asking Help For Would Cover For A Handicap Van To Take My Dad To All The Appointments And Therapies He Will Need To Attend During The Week And To Also Be Able To Get Him Out Of The House So He Doesn't Have To Be In The Same Place For The Rest Of His Life, It would also Be For Us Go Get A Handicap Ramp Installed For Him To Get In and Out Of The House and Also To Replace Carpet In The Bedroom He Will Have For Easier Use With The Hoyer To Transfer Him In And Out Of Bed And To Be Changed and Showered. Also To Widen Our Bathroom and Install A Walk In Shower So My Dad Can Be Toiletted And Showered. We Are Very Thankful and Grateful That My Dad Is Still With Us! Also A Thank You Ahead Of Time! We Just Want and Can't Wait To Start Our New Life At Home With William!
