THE STORY:

STRETCH GOALS: Procrastinators: please know that your donation will still make a difference for Docs In Progress. While we have made it to our initial goal of raising $15,000 to go towards the expenses of our move, whatever we raise from here on will be put towards capacity-building efforts, including building an operating reserves so Docs In Progress can better navigate unexpected expenses such as we faced with our move this year.

MAKE-A-MOVE CAMPAIGN
Docs In Progress is moving in January! As downtown Silver Spring has blossomed in tandem with the growth of our nonprofit organization, we knew it was a matter of time before our little house on First Avenue would have to make way for new development.

While the prospect of a move was not unexpected – the timing was! The news came fast and furious, and we’ve had to pull up anchor and find new digs while remaining committed to our classes, screenings and signature events like Community Stories. While we have loved hosting classes, talks, parties, fellowship meetings, and a home-away-from-home for several thousand filmmakers over the years who have joined us in what has come to be known affectionately as "The Doc House," it is time to move on. We have found a great space in the downtown Silver Spring Arts & Entertainment District at the corner of Wayne Avenue and Cedar Lane, and we need your help to make it home!

We have great plans for 2017: all the things Docs In Progress is known for in terms of our programs, services, and community will continue. With new space we have a chance to offer new programs to more people in different ways.  Creating a new home and building our capacity means we need to raise funds. Grants and revenue from classes and events only provides a part of the money needed to support our operations. We count on supporters like you!

The decision to stay in the house through the end of the year with the increased rent is not one our Board made lightly, but ultimately we decided it was important to keep our 2016 program schedule as planned, and to minimize disruption on the day to day running of the organization. We have started a campaign to raise those funds before the end of the year.

Because a move was unanticipated and sudden, , we are now looking at an additional unanticipated $15,000 in expenses as we round out the year. How does that break down?

  • $5,000 in additional rent so that we could stay in the Doc House through the end of 2016 without disrupting previously scheduled programming.
     
  • $5,000 in moving expenses (packing and moving all our furniture, equipment, and files, getting both the old and new space cleaned up, Internet installation fees, setting up a PO box for several months during the interim between moving out and moving in)
     
  • $5,000 in additional staff time spent on the move (on top of the time we are already spending on ensuring programming continues uninterupted).

IF WE REACH OUR GOAL, we can breathe easy that the added expenses for the move will be covered .

IF WE SURPASS OUR GOAL, any additional funds will be put towards building a reserves fund so that we can build capacity for increased program delivery and weather unanticipated expenses like this more smoothly in the future.

Our space has created a sense of place for our community, and we are hoping we can turn to you at this crucial juncture to help us transition smoothly to the next chapter of Docs In Progress. Unlike our past fundraising campaigns, we will not be offering perks, but we hope you will understand that the perk is keeping us in the house through the end of the year and moving to the next perfect location. The homeyness of Docs In Progress will move with us and we will continue to be a welcoming and nurturing space for documentary filmmakers of all backgrounds and experience levels. Home is where the Docs are!
