EVENT DATE Apr 26, 2016

On Saturday, 16 April 2016, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Ecuador’s northern coastline, killing hundreds and injuring thousands. Countless people lost their houses – amongst them numerous peasants living in the Manabí province, the epicentre of the earthquake. About 20 houses have been completely destroyed in the sectors Río Mariano and El Matecito which are part of the canton of San Vincente, province of Manabí. In 2010/2011, I spent a year abroad in Ecuador during which a host family took me in who originates from Río Mariano and El Matecito and whose relatives (grandfather, uncles and aunts) are peasants in that region. Since my year abroad, I have returned several times to Ecuador in general and to family members of my host family living in that region in particular. Over the years, we have established a close friendship. Both my sisters have made a visit to my host family in Río Mariano and El Matecito just last month. A few weeks later, an earthquake destroyed all houses in just a few minutes. Peasants all around San Vicente are self-supporting and earn money by selling milk of their livestock. Their houses are the result of years of hard work. Costs arise for sheet zinc roofing, the right wood of the Guayacán trees, certain kinds of lime trees, certain kinds of laurel and possibly brickwork for foundations. After this earthquake, the people living there have to start over from scratch. Fast aid for the peasants in Río Mariano and El Matecito cannot be expected, since Ecuador’s rural areas are often neglected. For example, the houses in this region have only been connected to the national power grid in 2015. Six days after the earthquake, not a single aid convoy with medical support has reached the area. For all these reasons and more, I am collecting donations for the peasants in Río Mariano and El Matecito in hopes that they will ease their restart after the earthquake. The donation’s goal of 100,000 is equivalent to the costs of a new house. Effectively, the amount will not be donated to one single family, but divided amongst several families in need living in that region. My host-mother Mariuxi Basurto will ensure that the donations reach those families, for she grew up in that region and personally knows the people still living there. If the feedback is adequately high, the goal will be set higher. Every cent will be explicitly used for the reconstruction of the houses and invested in the following materials: - zinc plates for roofing - wood for foundations, walls, flooring - bricks - miscellanea such as nails, screws, mortar At the moment, the project refers to the small ambit of Río Mariano and El Matecito, since I can guarantee the truthful and responsible handling of the money. Following projects in other regions might be possible, depending on the success of this project. Thank you very much for every cent donated!
