Marisol is an adorable 17 month old girl whom we have come to know well in the Hospital Claudio Benati in Zumbahua, Ecuador. When we first met her, she was severely malnourished and weak to the point of being unable to sit up in bed. She cried night after night as we first hydrated her and then improved her nutrition. Now with her remarkable recovery, she is a changed girl. She blows us (her medical team) kisses every morning and readies her finger so we can check the oxygen saturation in her blood. She is making great progress with our physical therapist and her attentive care at the children's home; she sits up and can support her weight with the help of a brace.
Sadly, she still isn't completely well. She has a broken heart. There is a hole between the ventricles in her heart which means it has to work harder than usual and it sends too much blood to her lungs. As a result she has spent most of her short life so far with us in the hospital. We have her on a wait list for the much needed heart surgery, but unfortunately here, in the public healthcare system, there is a very long wait for the surgery that she needs. In the meantime her condition has gotten worse, with frequent pneumonia, and we're afraid that she won't be able to wait much longer. A private hospital in Quito has offered to perform her surgery at half of the normal cost of $10,000. At this hospital, she can get her surgery as soon as we can raise the funds.
Please consider donating just $5-10, the cost of one or two day's coffee, to help fix Marisol's heart!
