Help Fund a College App for 1st-Gen, Low-Income Families
Organized by: Erin Wheeler
You ever tried to feel your way around a dark room. It's not impossible, but having the light on makes it easier. Being in the dark is how most 1st-generation, low-income, minority students enter college. This population of students have a significantly lower college graduation rate and increasing amount of college debt without a degree. I encounter many students who have received little or no guidance from their high school counselor or family. My name is Dr. Erin Wheeler, a 1st-generation, low-income, minority college student who beat the odds and is dedicated helping others do the same. Preppy, a mobile college counseling app, is designed to target the specific needs of this under-served population. Preppy is intended to help parents and high school students navigate the maze of college preparation. From mobile devices, users will have access to personalize preparation plans that includes resources to help determine college major, narrow college choices, search for scholarships, and prepare for admissions tests. The app will distribute valuable college preparation knowledge through personalized quizzes, videos, calendars, task lists and reminders. Each user will have a personalized collection of resources. Funds will be utilized secure high quality developers and graphic designers to complete the first version of the mobile app. If you were the first in your family to go to college and you beat the odds, please pay it forward to help the next generation!
