Help Get a Paternity Test for Kinslee McCain
Organized by: Inside-Outside Alliance
Inside-Outside Alliance is asking our friends and supporters to help pay for a paternity test for Kinslee, the daughter of Matthew McCain, who died in the custody of the Durham County Jail on January 19, 2016. Matthew suffered from diabetes and epilepsy. He died in jail after he was denied a proper diet and medically neglected despite having multiple seizures. According to the state medical examiner’s office, Matthew’s levels of dilantin (a crucial anti-seizure medication) were dangerously low at the time of his death.
Along with his mother, aunts, cousins, and others, Matthew is survived by his girlfriend, Ashley Canady, and their daughter, Kinslee, who will never get to meet her father because of the jail’s abuse and neglect. Kinslee is owed survivor's benefits from Social Security. However, in order to collect them, Ashley needs to get her a paternity test. The state medical examiner's office* will charge $350 to test Matthew's blood, $650 to test his tissue, and $210 each for Ashley and Kinslee's DNA test. There is no doubt that Kinslee is Ashley and Matthew’s daughter. Besides the undeniable resemblance between daughter and father, Matthew's mother wrote a notarized letter to Social Security verifying that Kinslee is her granddaughter. But, as usual, the system is unwilling to accept the word of people who are poor, who are black or brown, and, especially, who are women and mothers.
The criminal (in)justice system charges inflated prices, fees, and fines at every step, from jail to courts to probation. Matthew's repeated medical visits in the jail, which did not prevent his death, cost $20 apiece. His frequent phone calls to Ashley came at an exorbitant price. Every item he bought from Aramark's commissary cost far more than it would have on the outside. And now, even in death, the system is financially exploiting him and the family he has left behind.
We, as a community, are better than this. The state should not be charging Ashley for this paternity test. Let’s make sure that she doesn’t have to bear the cost alone. Please donate whatever you can!
