Help Grace (from Malawi) Finish Her Degree

First year complete ... one more to go!
January 09, 2017
Hi friends ... I just got an email from a woman I profiled on She Inspires Her asking for some help. Grace Maalo Chalera is a 40-year-old mother of 3 boys. She lives in rural Blantyre, Malawi, and runs a tailoring business, grill shop and pig farm. Oh, and she's a teacher too. Generally a remarkable woman. (You can read her story on She Inspires Her.) Her husband died unexpectedly some years ago and her life was turned upside down. But ever resourceful, she picked herself up and just moved forward. At the time I wrote about Grace, she was doing very well, growing the businesses and putting her boys through university. She was connecting local farmers with pork-buying customers through a collective she established and had plans to open a tailoring school to teach the trade to young people who are struggling to find work. Since we spoke, Grace has enrolled in a Bachelors of Education program at Catholic University of Malawi as the foundation for the tailoring school she wants to run. She only has two semesters to go but unfortunately has run into financial difficulties. She had to shut the grill shop and tailoring business due to theft in her absence and the money she earns from farming and teaching pays her family expenses and son's college fees. There is not enough left over to cover her own fees and the university is not letting her sit exams. She's not asking for a lot - it will take about $1000 to finish - and I figure if I got some friends to chip in we could help her get there. So what do you say? Forego your Starbucks today and let's help Grace finish university. I guarantee this will make you feel better than any Pumpkin Spice Latte ever will!
