Corn tortillas are the mainstay in the diets of rural Guatemalans. Families typically grow corn on small plots of land which provides them with the raw material needed to make tortillas to get them through the year. However, with the ongoing drought in Central America crops have died and corn prices are very high. This article from the BBC provides a lot more detail on the situation: Guatemala Families Struggle for Food in Central American Drought.
In May, Familias de Corazón made visits to families in the areas of Guatemala most affected by the drought. Several families in the area requested a meeting where they asked if there was any way they could receive extra corn in place of some other basket items on the next visit. Fide agreed to make this change for the next visit and the families were happy.
When we shared the visit reports, several adoptive families asked if there was some way to provide more immediate help to the families. Fide thought a fundraiser would be a great idea and is happy to make a trip back to the area and use whatever money we raise to purchase corn for the birth families who live there.
If you can contribute even a small amount it will go a long way to helping these families through a tough time.
As always, thanks for your support of Guatemalan birth families!
