Petionville Camp is a city of make-shift, mud-floored shelters made of tarp, sticks and twine in the center of Port-au-Prince in Haiti. It is the temporary home to 23,000 displaced people from the 2010 Haiti earthquake. The neighborhoods these people lived in before the earthquake border the edges of the camp; they are so close to their former homes and yet remain homeless. With little to no means, they cannot afford what for us would be relatively minor investments and risks necessary to get their families out of the mud and back to their home. J/P HRO works to make living conditions in the camp better like providing medical care, schooling for children and community programs. But JPHRO’s main objective is to help these people get home.
This is no small task because home is so much more than just four walls and a fresh coat of paint. Home is a community that is safe and sanitary. Home is neighbors and children playing outside. Home is a school for children to learn and grow. Home is access to fresh water. Home is a church to go to on Sunday. Home is a hospital nearby to take your loved one to if they are sick. Home is what J/P HRO is working to build for every person in Petionville Camp, and we’re making progress every day."
Please join all of us in Helping Haiti Home. We can do this together if we just take it one step at a time.
All You Need To Do…
On average, it costs about $1300* per person to make the journey from sleeping in the mud under a tarp in Petionville Camp to thriving in a house with the services and support that our community members deserve. This covers the cost of rebuilding homes and revitalizing schools, clinics and other community services; as well the cost of rubble and debris removal. Millions of square feet of rubble still clog the streets of Port-au-Prince, a key obstacle to helping people home.
Each $20 contribution you make helps someone take one more step closer to HOME.
Note: This figure is based on our previously funded projects and represents an average estimated cost. All donated funds will be used as unrestricted funds in conjunction with support from international or multi-lateral donors across all of our programs and support services, all of which work together to Help Haiti Home.
