BENEFITING: Zara Aina
I am SO excited to tell you, I have been selected to be a part of the Zara Aina Madagascar trip this year to TRAIN AS A FUTURE LEADER OF THE ZARA AINA COMPANY!
I have never felt more honored to be part of a company that values children's empowerment through the Arts! I have only been involved with this company for a few months and it has changed my life completely!!!
Zara Aina was founded in 2012 by the Broadway actors Lucas Caleb Rooney and Bryce Pinkham in an effort to create a cultural exchange, or “sharing of life” between impoverished Malagasy communities and American actors. Zara Aina launched its first official residency in Antananarivo, Madagascar in 2013.
On that pilot trip, a team of ten American volunteer artists and teachers spent a month living with a Malagasy Youth Company of 14 middle school students, engaging in a cultural exchange and building and rehearsing a show based on a Malagasy folktale. The children performed all over Antananarivo, and also took their show on the road, touring it to rural communities.
Since then, over the last five years the company has hit INCREDIBLE MILESTONES including creating their Zara Aina Youth Theater Company and in 2014, a team of Zara Aina artists returned for a second residency, rehearsing a new show with an expanded company of 30 at-risk middle school students and performing at venues around Antananarivo, including at UNICEF’s 30th Anniversary Celebration for over 3,000 people. In 2015, during the third residency in four years, ZA worked tirelessly to expand the Youth Company to include 45 at-risk middle school students, as well as hire a paid staff of five, and implemented a new curriculum and weekly schedule, allowing our Youth company to meet six times per week for storytelling performance rehearsals, English classes and creative arts programming.
They also rented a new temporary space to house our programming and act as a centralized location for our children to receive nutritional and medical aid. This company is UNBELIEVABLE and work tirelessly at every turn to share stories from their experiences with the children of Madagascar to help bridge the gap between our two cultures and worlds.

The goal is to maintain a spirit of devising and teaching year-round and to cultivate a larger community of volunteers in the U.S. that are well-trained and well-tested in our pedagogy, and who are helping year-round to develop strategies for achieving program sustainability in Madagascar.
WHO ON EARTH WOULDN'T WANT TO BE A PART OF THAT?!? I know I DO! And with your help...I can!!!
I was lucky enough to be involved in already two outreach programs with ZA which involved working with children in a WIN Shelter in the Bronx and then traveling to rural Alabama for one week to teach the BAMA Kids Youth centre and they put on a performance for their WHOLE TOWN and rocked it!!!! The power of Zara Aina and this incredible group of people is something I have never seen before.
At the heart of Zara Aina is the transformative power of storytelling. I have experienced it firsthand. We believe that access to theatre activities creates confident learners who are better prepared to participate actively in their education, community and social lives. From thinking creatively to collaborating with others, and communicating clearly to following an idea from conception through implementation to production, theatrical storytelling and performance can profoundly motivate children to achieve more and invest in their sense of possibility.
THIS WORK IS WHAT I WANT TO DO FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. To be able to be trained as a FUTURE LEADER of Zara Aina, a company I believe so passionately in, fills me in a way I cannot even express! I believe in the power of ART!!! I believe in the power of CONNECTION!!! And I believe in the POWER OF CHILDREN and empowering them to express their voices and letting them be heard!! Now, more then ever, we need to reach out on a GLOBAL SCALE and reach the children who need it most to make this next generation an empowered, collective of souls living their purpose with meaning and love. I wouldn't want to do it with any one else then clowns that I love :)
