EVENT DATE Aug 03, 2016
When a girl is born in a brothel, or forced into prostitution, there is very little chance she will know anything else. Drug addictions, stigmatization by her community (even by other women), abuse, and sexual violence become her life. She will likely never know of a better life for herself, a life where she is free to pursue an education, to decide that her body is her's, and rise above the disadvantage that was forced upon her.
Hi! My name is Lauren. Help me begin my life-long journey helping women rise above oppression and violence.
Starting with an organization called New Light in Calcutta, India, I plan to dedicate three months, starting this August, to helping daughters of sex workers and victims of sex trafficking and prostitution achieve an education, a home and opportunities they would not have otherwise.
While at New Light, I plan to start an art therapy initiative, giving these girls the outlet they need to express themselves, and ultimately start to heal. Invest in me and you are investing in a better future for these girls, who deserve the love and attention I promise to bring them.
Sex trafficking has become so prolific in India that it’s almost impossible to know just how many women are affected, but numbers upwards of twenty million have been suggested. I know full well there is no easy solution to the complicated issue of sex trafficking, but I need to start somewhere. Until violence against women ends, we cannot fully progress economically, environmentally, socially and culturally.
I’m a recent graduate and don’t have the means to get myself to New Light. I can’t do this without your help! Anything you can offer means the world to me.
Thank you so much for your time and generosity.
