Help me publish THE COLOR PROJECT!
Organized by: Sierra Abrams
If you're here, looking at this page, you're one of two things:
1. A friend or family member who is wonderful enough to consider supporting me.
2. An instantly awesome stranger who clicked on this because you appreciate the arts.
Either way, thank you. Thank you for your support, whether it's in funds or prayers or both. I need all the support from my lovely friends and family and the kindness of strangers, you have no idea. They say it takes a village to raise a child....and I say that's just as true with writing and publishing a book. Whether you're doing it traditionally or independently, there are a lot of people involved.
If you want to read my story, about THE COLOR PROJECT, what early readers have said about it, and why I'm self publishing, click this link: http://www.sierraabrams.com/2016/09/coming-soon-to-bookstore-near-you.html
If you donate money for TCP to be published, you automatically reserve your copy. (Paperback, unless you donate more than $100, and then you get a hardcover. You deserve it. XD) You don't have to take me up on this when the book is released, but I want to make sure everyone who blesses me with the gift of money now, gets the gift of THE COLOR PROJECT later.
Now let me break down the costs of publishing for you -
- Professional editing: $1,500
- Professional cover design: $1,000
- Press and distribution: $1,200
- Advanced copies and advertisement: approx. $500
Expensive, right? Big publishing houses like Harper and Scholastic give authors an advance, and if the author's book sells enough books to pay back the advance, the author then starts receiving royalties. With an indie press, the author has to *pay* an advance up front, and then become their own publicist and marketing team and ambassador in the hopes they'll make back some of that money. All their sales from the beginning bring in royalties, but it's an average of $2-$3 a sale. Which means, to make the $4,000 it costs, I'd have to sell at least 1,400 copies a year. Which is a lot. And while the book could totally take off due to word of mouth and good advertisements, that's not likely to happen in a year, or even two or three.
So, that's that. But I'm not going to let it stop me. I'm asking for your help because I believe in this book. I want the world to read this story about a dorky everygirl with insecurities about becoming an adult, and her community full of amazing, different, strange, beautiful people. It's a direct sample from my life, from the people around me, about my experiences and sufferings and triumphs. It's already blessed the lives of the girls who've read it, and while that is more than enough, if I have an opportunity to share with even more girls and boys going through similar situations, I'm going to take it.
So, in closing, please consider helping make this dream of mine come true. Back in the year 2001, when I was only 7 years old and had my whole life ahead of me, I knew in my heart what I wanted and I've pursued it ever since then. 15 years later, I'm just getting started in this adventure and I can't wait to share my words with the world.
