THE STORY:

To Anyone Reading This That Has Been Through This With A Loved One, Hi, My name is Sandy, and I'm starting this campaign for my grandmom (Nan), who was recently diagnosed with lung cancer. About a week and a half ago doctors found a tumor about the size of a golf ball in the middle of her lung, and because of her age and the risks of the surgery, it was deemed inoperable. As far as the bad news goes, the cancer is potentially aggressive, surgery isn't an option, and all we're left with is an intense battery of chemo and radiation; as we all know, this sort of therapy is strenuous and taxing on the body in even the best of circumstances. The good news is that the type of cancer she has typically responds well to this treatment, so with the right help, the odds are in our favor and she has a fighting chance. Cancer rarely affects only the afflicted individual, as many of us whose lives have been touched by cancer can attest- dealing with its consequences spreads to family and loved ones. I am devastated to say that not 2 weeks before this news, my Aunt Kathy, sister to my Mother, and daughter to my Grandmother, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer- the doctors told her there are no treatments that are going to help, they don't know how long she has, and the reality is the outlook for her is not good. It breaks my heart in two to watch her go through this knowing there's nothing I can do to help but stand by and watch. There is not a more helpless feeling in the world. Our little family is falling apart, and getting news like this within the span of a month is more than I think anyone can be expected to burden, but we're doing our best, comforting where we can, and fighting like hell the rest of the way. Nan is the type of grandmom you only see in movies- growing up, her house was Disneyland to us kids. She always had candy in her purse, the time to stop at McDonalds for snacks, tske us anywhere we wanted to go, she had an endless supply of VHS tapes to record every ounce of our childhood- she knew in her wisdom, that her beloved grandchildren hated it then, but would be able to revisit the most precious and irreplaceable times of their lives when they were older. She taught us the of love animals and to love life, the importance of etiquette and respect for traditions, the value of memories and experiences, and that no one should ever be greeted as a stranger. She taught me to give until I can give no more and to not ask for anything in return. We all have loved ones that have suffered and meant the world to us, and watching them fight their way out makes us feel helpless and alone. When we can help, we do, because that is what we do for family, and right now, I desperately need your help so that I may help her. Nan is currently starting her Chemo and Radiation, but unfortunately, money is extremely tight. Insurance is helping with the bulk of the medical costs but she still owes 20% for everything and has to pay for a lot of her medications out of pocket; for someone on a fixed income it's still more than she can afford, and her only available caregiver, my Mother, is sharing the financial burden and strain. Since this all started, Mom has had her electricity shut off twice, is struggling for even gas money to get to and from appointments, and is having a difficult time even seeing to her own needs. Her current costs don't even count for basic needs like food for two, or even allow for a diet change more suitable for one who is having trouble keeping most things down. We've all lost loved ones, and I know my story has to sound familiar to your own life, so if you can, in the name of your own loved one, please, help ease this stress. Losing one family member is hard enough on its own, and now we're fighting to save another. Help Nan, because more than anyone I know, she deserves to be helped. Every little bit is going to go a long way to our family. Thank you so much- your support means everything to us
