BENEFITING: COMMUNITY IN ACTION RIO INC
All children have the right to play! Some of us were lucky enough to grow up in rich environments full of opportunities for exploration, discovery, and free play. These experiences helped shape us as people and gave us a strong connection to the world around us. Today, there are thousands of youth in Rio’s favelas (shantytowns) growing up without those same opportunities to play.
In collaboration with Playlife, Hilton Hotels, and Enactus; Community in Action is working to turn an abandoned court into a fully functioning athletic and education center. Playlife is a social project that was founded in 2014 with the goal of providing sport and educational opportunities to favela youth. By combining both athletics and English lessons youth have the opportunity to learn a tangible skill while developing their character through sport.
After getting displaced from their original space Playlife now runs the project out of an abandoned court on top of the favela. Not only is this dangerous for the participants however it hinders one of the main goals of the project; providing a safe environment for youth to grow, develop, and express themselves.
Poverty for favela youth is not only a lack of money; it is a lack of direction, a sense of meaning, and more so basic social opportunities. Refurbishing this court will have diverse positive impacts on the children in this underserved region and the broader community. Principally we hope that it will add legitimacy to the project encouraging more youth to participate and thus expanding the project's impact. It is also our hope that we will help change perspectives about the value of space while encouraging community members to take ownership once complete.
We hope to raise enough money to:
~ Deep clean the space
~ Re-paint the lines and varnish the floor
~ Buy new soccer goals
~ Build basketball hoops
~ Paint multiple big murals
~ Add a permanent classroom space including: Desks, chairs, whiteboard, and supplies
PLEASE consider making a donation today. 100% of the funds raised through this campaign will go towards our goal of refurbishing the court, no donation amount is too small! Your contribution will leave a positive impact for many years to come!
