Help Rowen move to Colorado and pursue his PhD.
Organized by: Rowen Thomas
My name is Rowen and I'm a nonbinary, genderqueer individual working on finishing my Masters degree in College Student Development at St. Edward's University in Austin. It's a small liberal arts college that emphasizes social justice and empowers its students to make lasting change in the world. I grew up in Houston, Texas and my family immigrated to the U.S. from India in 1986. I am a first generation American, and life long Texan. I am currently working part time and going to school full time finishing my Masters thesis. Right now, I'm living in Austin, TX with my ex-girlfriend (we're on good terms, we were together for 6.5 years, but I definitely need to move out to be able to focus on myself and my future, but I don't quite have the financial means yet). I was accepted into a PhD program in Higher Education and Student Affairs Leadership in Colorado and will be starting that program in August. I have a job lined up in Colorado at my university in August but graduate assistance jobs don't pay that well ($15,000 annual stipend). I work in the service industry right now and need some help to get my way to Colorado. I still need money to cover some moving costs (I'm trying to minimize cost by renting a truck and doing all the moving myself with a friend) and money for the deposit and first month's rent on my new apartment. Any little bit helps! I hoping to continue research from my Masters into my doctoral program and study policies and best practices about transgender and gender variant students in higher education. I want to be able to help create better research, practices, and knowledge so that gender variance is acknowledged and respected. I want to help people learn about my community. I think it is really an important time for those of us who are minorities (Gender, Sexual, and Romance minorities, but also to try to do everything we can to change the world to become a better place for all of us, especially those of us who have faced lifelong challenges based on aspects of ourselves that we did not choose. So I really hope that you can help me pursue this dream to try and make the world a little safer place for people like me. Thank you for taking the time to read about my fundraiser!
