Help Save Dogs from Distemper in Costa Rica
Organized by: Amelia Moreau
Hello! Thank you for looking to help these poor dogs in San Jose, Costa Rica. In the past 2 months we have lost 72 dogs to a very contagious disease of distemper in only 3 barrio's. Without the vaccination many more will most likely die. It is a terrible disease for both the dog but also the family to go through watching their family dog die.
In most cases the locals here cannot afford to take their pets to the vet or simply don't k now what signs to look for. The dogs stomach becomes thin and they will not want to eat. We are seeking money for raising for the actual cost of the medicine. Several friends including myself have done this in other places such as Honduras and Guatemala but did not realize the cost of medicine was nearly double here in Costa Rica. We have plenty of volunteers including locals and Expats from the area ready to help. We also have schools in the 3 main barrios we want to focus on that will let us use their facilities. They also are willing to pass out flyers to tell the families the importance of this vaccine.
We would like to also provide an oral de-worming, as well as a topical flea & tick liquid to the back of the neck at the same time. Ticks are the main cause of distemper in the first place but if other dogs with the disease come in contact with a dog then that will be reason as well. This disease is highly dangerous to the dog population of San Jose.
If we provide each dog with vaccine, de-worming and flea and tick it will be nearly $12 per dog. If we can place an order of over $2,500 which is our goal then we can get a discount of 10%. With $3,000 we will be able to help 240 dogs. We also intend to spend $100 on flyers that we will pass out to locals in both English and Spanish describing how important it is to do this for their pets. The schools agree to distribute them for us as well as many local businesses.
Thank you for taking the time to read and we hope you will want to help. If you are in the area and would like to volunteer that would be great as well!
