My heart is broken as I type this - Gringo did not survive surgery.  I am crushed as are all of the veterinary folks on Team Gringo who were See More

THE STORY:

Gringo the donkey, was found tied to a telephone pole in the blistering North Carolina heat. He is emaciated, was dehydrated, and his left hind foot was so swollen and painful that he could not put any weight on it. Who knows what happened to him and why he was discarded like a piece of trash.  Animal Control was called and he was taken to the rural animal shelter where it was decided they would euthanize him. Dr. Bartfield stepped in and offered to give him a chance. Gringo was transported (slowly and carefully) to Dr. Bartfield's farm. We were so afraid that he might fall in the trailer since he was weak and standing on only three legs. He was placed in a stall with deep bedding and fresh food and water. We examined Gringo and found that his hind foot was a mass of rotting smelly tissue. There were flies laying eggs in the draining tract. Miraculously Gringo still wanted to eat, though his pain parameters were elevated (respiration and heart rate). He was immediately placed on aggressive pain control and antibiotics. We were able to take some X-rays that same night and we found that the poor guy has a piece of wire around his lower leg (fetlock area). We want to perform surgery to remove that wire and also remove the mass of tissue that Gringo's body has built in trying to deal with this raging infection. We don't know what we will find when we get in to surgery - we are hoping that his bone will be okay. There is no skin to provide closure, so this surgery is going to result in an open would that will have to be managed for weeks to come until it scars in. Lucky for Gringo, he is a donkey and not a performance horse. We just want him to be able to have some quality of life. Any help towards his veterinary costs is so very much appreciated!

For all of those that are not familiar with Crowd Rise - note that we get 100% of your donations!  If you get a strange amount on your credit or debit card, don't worry, we just apply for that difference later and we will get the balance!
