Official Launch March 24
March 23, 2016
BENEFITING: HUNGRY FOR MUSIC INC
EVENT DATE: Jun 11, 2016
Hungry for Music is an organization that supports music education and cultural enrichment by acquiring and distributing quality musical instruments to underserved children with willing instructors and a hunger to play. At Hungry for Music, our most important service is putting musical instruments into hungry hands. We serve children who demonstrate a desire to learn music as well as teachers who have students willing to learn.
Six music education groups from around the country that Hungry for Music has supported over the years have the opportunity to play a special concert on a stage in front of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.
Over 125 kids with their chaperones will be traveling to the Hall for two special concerts on June 11th. Over our 22-year history, Hungry for Music has sought innovative music education programs to support across the country. We will be showcasing six of these programs at a special Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concert.
The concert will culminate a week-long music instrument drive in the greater Cleveland area which the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is sponsoring.
The groups include:
Internal Creations (Bronx)
Internal Creations is a classical guitar program dedicated to providing a safe, nurturing learning environment centered around expanding the student’s knowledge in music and decision-making. Students will demonstrate focus, work ethic, and outstanding citizenship & preparedness for college and post-secondary success if students decide to pursue guitar for a college or life career.
Internal Creations provides a free-of-charge music school for all age groups to come in, share, learn, and be exposed to the classical guitar. Many people cannot afford private classical guitar instruction for themselves or their children, but have an interest and motivation for the field. Many people never have a chance to pursue the field of music due to lack of finances, and we believe everyone should have an equal opportunity to experience music.
Intonation Music Workshop (Chicago)
Intonation Music Workshop empowers children to become rock stars on every stage of life through innovative music education. Intonation’s in-school, after-school, and summer programs provide year-round access to instruments, instruction, performance opportunities, and mentorship to youth age 6-17 in Chicago who wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity.
Through the process of learning to play instruments and working together with their peers, Intonation students get involved, learn new skills, express their creativity, and find their niche by playing in a pop band. Intonation partners with public and charter schools, the Chicago Park District, social service agencies, and other community organizations in the realization of its mission.
Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM) (Appalachia - VA, NC, SC, TN)
JAM's mission is to provide communities the tools and support they need to teach children to play and dance to traditional old time and bluegrass music. JAM is an after-school program for children in grades 4 – 8 and beyond that introduces music through small group instruction on instruments common to the Appalachian region, such as fiddle, banjo and guitar.
Each JAM program is individually operated and funded. By affiliating with the JAM organization, each program is eligible to receive support and resources for free, and is licensed to use “Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM)” to identify their traditional music education program.
Louisville Leopards Percussionist (Louisville)
The Louisville Leopard Percussionists are a performing ensemble comprised of 60+ student musicians ages 7-14, who reside in 26 different Louisville zip codes and attend 48 different schools in and around Louisville, Kentucky.
The Louisville Leopard Perucussionists mission is to provide a comprehensive musical experience for children that enriches lives and builds community. Our vision is for participants of diverse backgrounds to develop music appreciation, performance skills, proficiency on a variety of percussion instruments, and learn to improvise, compose, and teach music, and to care for their instruments. These skills build creativity and self-confidence and teach life-long values of personal discipline, cooperation, leadership, responsibility, and community.
River City Drum Corps (Louisville)
The River City Drum Corp., founded in 1993 by Edward White, focuses on children and young adults ranging between ages two and eighteen. These kids experience the richness of African culture while exploring African materials and drumming techniques. For nearly 20 years, the RCDC has achieved a harmony of traditional military corps style percussion with soulful African rhythms.
RCDC is committed to the education and sense of community that comes with music education. They have exceeded simply learning to play and read music, at RCDC, notes transform from black and white into colorful shapes that is something of their own, a piece of music they will keep uniquely theirs forever.
Rock to the Future (Philadelphia)
Rock to the Future provides music education for Philadelphia’s underserved youth at no cost to them or their families. Using music, our programs ignite passion and creativity, support academic achievement, and improve self-esteem. We empower individuals and strengthen communities.
Guided by her belief in the power of music education to transform the lives of children, Founding Executive Director Jessica Craft left a job in the financial services industry to begin Rock to the Future in 2010 after being awarded The Turning Point Prize of $15,000 from Women for Social Innovation. As a volunteer youth mentor and musician herself, Jessica believes in the power and value of music education and understands that sometimes it just takes one caring adult to mentor and motivate a child to stay in school, succeed academically and become empowered to achieve their dreams.
