Help Support Bianca's Family while she reports from Rojava!
Organized by: Bianca Lawless
EVENT DATE Jan 30, 2017
I am a 25-year-old student and activist based out of the Olympia, Washington area. In January 2017, I will be traveling as a student journalist from The Evergreen State College to the autonomous territory of Rojava in Syrian Kurdistan. The people of Rojava are enduring a war against D'aesh (also known as ISIS), and the despotic Turkish State--and succeeding against the most impossible odds. The Rojava Revolution, spearheaded by the historically oppressed, exploited, and disenfranchised Kurdish peoples, is more than just the liberation of a forgotten, marginalized Middle Eastern ethnic group--this is the front line of the worldwide fight against capitalism, patriarchy, and racism. The Western media has failed to give the revolution in Rojava, which is led by brave young women, the coverage it deserves; so I am travelling to war-torn Syria for six months to provide a first-hand account of this struggle, as an aspiring writer and as part of my undergraduate studies. The mainstream media has done little more than fetishize the courageous women risking their lives for freedom as "badass, sexy Amazons" in fashion magazines--a prime example of the patriarchal mentality that is not lost on the Middle East. The sexism that still exists even in the United States is just one of the many reasons why the struggle in Rojava is significant to a liberated future for all. I will need to cover my share of rent and bills that I currently split with my partner while I am overseas, as well as make sure my two precious dogs are well taken care of! Please consider donating to aid in supporting my family while I am away; my needs will be fully taken care of in Rojava, but I still have responsibilities at home. I am currently saving as much as I can, working two jobs while also going to school full-time. Thank you for considering aiding me in this cause. I plan to bring awareness of this crucially important struggle to the forefront of the Western consciousness, and perhaps shed some light on the dark times that lay ahead. Biji Rojava!
