Help The Millers Get Out of Debt and Retire
Organized by: Kristina Vinnacombe
My name is Kristina V. and I am starting this fundraiser for my grandparents, Bill and Betty Miller. My grandparents met in 1956 while both working at A&P Tea Company. Bill working in the bakery and Betty worked in the office as a comptometer. On September 22, 1957, at 19 and 20 years old, they got married. Six months after getting married, they adopted and welcomed Betty's 14 year old younger brother into their one bedroom apartment; and from that moment on until today, they have never experienced living alone. Bill and Betty have opened up and welcomed their home to several family members and friends over the years. In 1972, Bill started building the house they have been and are currently living in right now. It was finished in 1973. During that same year (1973) Betty herniated a disc in her back, resulting in back surgery. Steel rods were placed in her back and over the years, they have become bent and broken inside her back causing a lot of pain and distress. (I personally can't remember the last time I've seen her actually walk upright/with her back straight) On October 31, 1993, Bill had his first heart attack. He has had four heart attacks total. The second one occurred in May of 1994, the third one occurred in June of 1998, and the last one occurred in August of 2003. He has 8 stents in his heart as well as a defibrillator. On March 30, 2010, Bill had a HORRIBLE accident while at work. He took an 8 foot fall and hit the concrete parking lot. He suffered from a concussion, broken neck, 7 fractured ribs, broken femur in his left leg, broken wrist, knocked his right eye out of place, brain damage, memory loss and loss of hearing in his right ear. Still, 6 years later, he suffers from that fall. He still suffers from memory loss, loss of hearing, and vertigo. But even through hospital stay and the extensive physical therapy he went through, 2 years and 51 weeks after his accident, he went right back to work. Bill and Betty both are retired. Betty retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad in 2000 and Bill retired from the Post Office in 2001. The job Bill is currently employed at is to earn extra income because of the debt they are in...which is why I'm creating this fundraiser. Ultimately, I would love to raise enough money to help get my grandparents out of debt (about $200,000) and to help remodel some of the things in their home. Such as the carpet that has been here since my grandfather built the house and the back porch that is falling apart. It breaks my heart that my grandfather is still having to work just to make ends meet. His goal is to quit working in 2 years (when he turns 80 years old) so he can "relax" and be able to stay at home with my grandmother. Any and all help is appreciated. All I want is to see my grandparents happy, healthy and enjoying the time that they have..and enjoying it with each other.
