THE STORY:

Yellow Pants Project wrote -

The Yellow Pants Project was founded in honor of our friend Steve, who in the 1970s, wore a pair of yellow pants to school one day, and he was teased relentlessly by his fellow classmates for wearing them. Steve’s classmates called him a “fag” (“gay” wasn’t used at that time), and that label followed him throughout his school years.

As a young adult, Steve opened up and shared with his family and friends that he was, in fact, gay. However, that derogatory term assigned to him at such a young age, and the teasing and bullying that came along with it, never left his side. We will never know the true impact of his Yellow Pants story, as Steve’s life was cut short when he succumbed to alcohol addiction in 2008.

Yellow Pants Project provides anti-bullying education through a multi-week performing-arts workshop that culminates with a student-performed theatrical production that addresses anti-bullying awareness. High-school age students are required to audition for the workshop, which includes leadership & anti-bullying-awareness training provided by the Yellow Pants Project team, community volunteerism, and musical theater rehearsal. The musical production will be performed for students at the junior high school level.

During the multi-week training, student participants will receive formal instruction on the subjects of leadership and anti-bullying awareness. Through the leadership development training, participants will learn the skills and behaviors required to be a successful leader.  The anti-bullying awareness curriculum will provide the students with tools to combat and diffuse bullying situations they may encounter.  At the end of the training, the students will understand their role as change agents in their community by taking action against bullying rather than being a bystander.
