BENEFITING: MADAKTARI AFRICA
Earlier this month, Madaktari was part of a pediatric cardiac screening at Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute. Out of the 135 childern we screened, 15 needed immediate operation, 20 other children are being monitored with medication, 15 children were on unnecessary medication, and 60 had respiratory issues, malnutrition and/or dental issues. Of the 15 children scheduled for an immediate intervention, the most common diagnosis was a septal defect between the left and right ventricle, and Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). In PDA, abnormal blood flow occurs between two of the major arteries connected to the heart. After intervention, all of these children are expected to live a normal life. Without intervention, most of these kids are unlikely to make it their fifth birthday. We are working to build a new pediatric ward at Muhimbili National hospital to support the needs of the community. This ward would allow for increased treatment and monitoring of children with severe cardiac problems and prevent long term issues. Help us increase the capacity of the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute to properly help children with treatable cardiac issues this international heart day! Every little bit helps!
