Help Us Survive During VA Recoupment
Organized by: Corinne Hurst
In 2008 while on his first deployment to Iraq my husband suffered a back injury. Over time the injury progressed and we found out that it has caused permanent nerve damage to his left leg. After years of fighting with the VA he finally was able to obtain a rating that met his pain and limitations due to his combat injury. Over the last 6 years my husband has also continued to serve in his National Guard Unit, he works through PT for his back, and still manages to work full time and be an amazing father. We still 100% rely on his disability payments to keep him at a job that doesn't make his injury progress even worse and cause immense pain. We found out in April 2016 that starting in June 2016 the VA was going to be making deductions to his disability for over payments we knew nothing about. They are now taking 6 years worth of over payments in a 10 month period totaling over $10,000. I don't know about you but we did not have an extra $1300 a month to spare for almost a year without having it fully pull us under water. We are not contesting the debt... but the way the VA is taking it back from us will cause us to literally lose our home. Six years worth of over payments taken back in less than 1 year. They give very little notice on the matter and leave you with just enough time to realize you don't have any ducks available to get in a row. You call the main line and request a call from the department that handles this (as that building has no number to call to) and wait and wait and wait for someone to actually call you. We started that process in April and still no call back. My husband and I both work, but his disability payments were essential to keep us above water. We have tried everything to fix the situation with the VA with no progress.
We have managed to wiggle through almost half of the recoupment, but there is no wiggle left. We wouldn't be asking for help if we had any other way to fix it. Right now we are struggling to keep up with house payments as well as basic bills and food on the table. Any amount would be helpful beyond words. We hate to ask, but the payment schedule with the VA has left us with no other options.
