BENEFITING: DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS USA INC
What is the difference between a need and a want? New clothes, eating at a fancy restaurant, an extra pair of shoes, some fun extra thing you grab at the store--those are wants. Vaccines, surgery in war zones, measures to lower maternal mortality rates, medical treatments for everything from cholera to TB--those are needs. Needs you can help assuage by donating to Doctors Without Borders, an independent and impartial nonprofit that works its hardest to meet those needs worldwide every single day. So here's the challenge: for one week each and every time you think about buying something, ask yourself if it is a need (food, water, shelter, medicine or safety) or a want. Be honest. Latte's are not necessary. A seventh pair of shoes? Fabulous pair of new jeans? Could you skip a haircut? Search yourself and ask, do I need this? Or would the money be better spent on someone who needs surgery, or malaria treatment, or a vaccine? As you go, keep track of how much you are saving. At the end of the week, come right back here and make your (deductible) donation of the money you have saved to Doctors Without Borders, so they can give people their needs.
