Help Abbie...help kids!
Organized by: Doug Werner
My name is Abbie Werner, I'm 17 years old and my dad's award winning book is called 'Abbie Gets Fit'. We are raising money to provide fitness books to kids in elementary schools all across America. Here is why we need your help!
'Designed to Move', a recent physical activity action agenda created by Nike® and The American College of Sports Medicine, estimates that today’s generation of American youth will be the first in our history that will not live longer lives than their parents. In 2015, the National Physical Activity Plan Alliance reported that only 42% of 6-11 year olds and just 8% of 12-15 year olds in the U.S. meet the minimum criteria for daily physical activity. According to the US Centers for Disease Control, nearly 20% of American children between the ages of 6 and 11, and 25% between the ages of 12 and 19, are now clinically obese. These kids are doomed to a life of chronic illness, bullying and even early death without our help!
I am a fit teenager now, but I used to be one of those unfortunate kids. As a fourth-grader, I was inactive, overweight and absolutely humiliated when I failed my school’s fitness exam. I asked my parents for help and they changed my life forever by starting a daily exercise plan with me. Six months later, I not only passed my fitness exam, but I exceeded the ‘challenge’ goal for all exercises, which represents the highest level of fitness for kids. In fact, I improved my one mile walk/run time by nearly 5 minutes in just 6 months!
I was so happy with my results that I asked my dad to write a book to help other kids just like me. 'Abbie Gets Fit' received the 2012 Book of the Year Award from Creative Child Magazine, our story was featured on ABC-TV in New York City and in 2013 I was a keynote speaker at the annual meeting of The President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition at the Department of Health and Human Services in Washington, D.C., where our story was referred to throughout the day as a ‘model for parent-child fitness engagement’.
To help other parents do the same for their kids, my dad, with the help of youth fitness experts Dr. Charles Corbin and Dr. Wayne L. Westcott, has now written the ‘Get Fit Together’ program for families. ‘Get Fit Together’ is a very concise and easy plan that is full of fun and inexpensive tips to help families become more active together. This program includes many of the things my parents did to help me get fit too. But, it all started with that fitness exam in my school!
There are nearly 100,000 elementary schools in the USA and our goal is to reach at least 10% of them this year. For each $15 raised through this campaign, one lucky school will receive a hard copy of ‘Abbie Gets Fit’, and an electronic copy of the ‘Get Fit Together’ manual to be shared digitally with students and their parents. This is all very valuable information that will help lots of kids and parents to get fit!
In addition to the fitness material for schools, this fundraiser will contribute 10% of all net proceeds to Boston Children's Hospital and their wonderful Optimal Weight for Life program. Another 10% of net proceeds will be donated to PHIT America and its Go! Grants program, which is doing great things for kids in elementary schools all over the country.
National Health and Fitness Month is in May and we'd like to complete this school mailer in time for that. Each $15 raised will provide valuable fitness information for one school, its students and their parents. Each copy of ‘Abbie Gets Fit’ will also include a benefactor appreciation letter. If you sponsor 5 schools for $75, you will be listed as a ‘Bronze’ donor, 10 schools for $150 is ‘Silver’, 20 schools ($300) is ‘Gold’, 30 schools ($450) is ‘Platinum’ and those who sponsor 50 schools or more, one in each state, will be identified as a ‘Fitness Ambassador’ ($750). Each Fitness Ambassador will also receive a signed copy of ‘Abbie Gets Fit’ and the ‘Get Fit Together’ manual.
How many schools would you like to sponsor? Please make a commitment today and please share this link with your friends. Thank you very much for your support!
