My iMentor mentee is my favorite person in NYC (sorry, friends!). She's bright, patient, thoughtful, and caring high school junior who moved to the US just a few years ago. She's learned English at school while spending her evenings doing the lion's share of housework at home to help out her parents who are dealing with major health issues. My mentee has big dreams: go away to a big college where she can study abroad, then become an FBI agent, and also maybe a doctor.
Over two years we've built a great relationship, one that is open, honest, supportive, and pushes both of us to be better. Together, we work to improve her resume for college, practice interviewing skills, and brainstorm ways to focus better in class. We talk frankly about what college is like and how to pay for it, but also debrief the latest Justin Bieber songs. She tells me she's proud that I'm almost done with my Master's degree, laughs at all of my dumb jokes, and constantly checks in on how my family is doing. She says that even though her parents are supportive, since they're dealing with health challenges and raising three kids, I'm the only person in her life focused exclusively on her.
More high school students deserve a relationship like we've have built, and iMentor's four-year pair model is an ideal way to make sure high school students have the opportunity to work with an adult who is focused on helping them succeed in the long term. iMentor's curriculum is built around college readiness, and it's been an easy and effective way to help my mentee prepare for what lies ahead.
My mentee is amazing and I'm a better person because of her. Our relationship is one of the best things about my life in this crazy city, and your donation, no matter the size, will help my mentee and students like her get set up for success.
