Organized by: Daniella Dugarde
Andrew is an almost 18 year old young man suffering from Mitochondrial disease. Mitochondria are responsible for creating more than 90% of the energy needed by the body to sustain life and support growth. Mitochondria Diseases appear to cause the most damage to cells of the brain, heart, liver, skeletal muscles, kidney and the endocrine and respiratory systems depending on which cells are affected. Andrew has muscular skeletal, respiratory issues, vision and hearing problem. Because of the muscular skeletal problems Andrew has developed severe spinal issues which limit his ability to move his legs and walk on his own. There is no cure for this disease and little help that can be done except surgeries to help correct the areas being hindered. Andrew is due to have surgery on his Spine to help support his vertebrae better by implanting 2 - 8 inch rods and more then 20 pins to support his spine better and try to stop it from collapsing on itself. Andrew's parents are doing all they can but surgery and recovery are expensive, all the after care Andrew will need is not completely covered by his medical insurance. He will need months of rehabilitation and tutoring along with home care. Andrew's mom stays home from work to help her son and this single income family needs help.
