THE STORY:

Poverty
The Kenya Poverty Mapping Report of 2005 singles out the Coast Province as a major contributor of Kenya's poverty and illiteracy levels. Education is an indispensable factor for development and poverty reduction.

Illiteracy and poor school performance
Schools in the Coastal region perform dismally in their exams and are ranked the poorest performers nationally. In every year’s primary and secondary examination results, Coast Province is always ranked as the poorest performing province in the whole county.

Nonexistent or ill-equipped study, learning and research spaces
Only 3 schools in the whole of Kilifi County have equipped libraries with relevant study materials. Access to a quiet study environment is almost impossible, characterized by too much noise and interruption from family members with frequent demand for students to participate in house chores as opposed to studying.

There is lack of relevant information on sustainable agricultural practices and demonstrations on improving production and opportunities for the farmers and entrepreneurs.

The need
In an effort to reduce the high illiteracy levels currently ailing our community, Tujiinue Women Group seeks to establish a Community Library and Resource Center which will serve as a hub and an equal access point to students, youths and adults through basic education, continuing education, and vocational and life skills training.

We are appealing for donations to buy books, stationery and supplies, furniture (desks, tables and chairs, construct shelves), buy computers and pay for office space (rent) and utilities in order to make the centre operational.
