REBUILDING TOGETHER VALLEY OF THE SUN INC wrote -Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries in people age 65 and older. Complications from falls can also lead to other related health issues, both physical and psychological. In the United States, one of every three persons over the age of 65 falls each year, and two-thirds of those who fall do so again within six months. This means as Americans live longer, and continue to stay in their homes, proper safety modifications are essential in households with persons over 65. Falls are generally not the result of a single factor but rather a combination of both internal and external factors.
The Senior Fall Prevention Services program through Rebuilding Together Valley of the Sun can provide home safety modifications to help reduce the risk of falls. These modifications include the installation of a variety of devices that will make a home much safer - bathroom grab bars, hi-lo bathtub bars, transfer/assist poles, raised toilet seats; bath/shower seats, slip-resistant bath/shower mats, hand-held shower heads, and transfer ramps, carbon monoxide and smoke detectors and night lights.
These services are FREE to low-income seniors, individuals with disabilities and veterans In 2011, Rebuilding Together visited over 300 homes of elderly or disabled people, providing more than $110,000 value of equipment. Over the four years of the program we have installed grab bars and other equipment in over 1200 homes. The original program funding by Virginia G. Piper Foundation ended in June, 2010, and Rebuilding Together continues to need sponsors to fund this ever-expanding service to our low-income neighbors.
