Many Domestic Violence victims who have fled from an abusive situation are in great financial need as they struggle to support themselves and their children.
S, a mother of two children, ages 6 and 4, fled from her abuser five years ago in order to protect her children from harm. Recently, however, he found their neighborhood and followed S as she was picking-up her children from school. He shot at S and the children while she tried to drive away from him. Fortunately, S and the children were able to escape unharmed.
[While navigating the legal system to secure a restraining order and have the abuser arrested] S is looking for a new apartment in a different borough, where she and the children can live safely; However, she needs assistance paying the costs associated with the move and securing a new place.
The Courtroom Advocates Project (CAP) is a joint initiative between Sanctuary for Families, the New York Legal Assistance Group, and 12 law schools in the New York City metropolitan area. CAP provides valuable in-court assistance to hundreds of pro-se litigants in New York City’s family courts; however, CAP clients like S continue to have urgent needs outside of the legal system. Please support CAP in its effort to address the unique needs of client S and many others.
