THE STORY:

I’m Karly - a Californian graduate student living in the Middle East. I met Manaf last year while working in Jordan, and through his amazing sense of humor and patience in teaching me Arabic we became quick friends. Manaf is Syrian, and his family is still in the country and urgently needs your help.

Here is a message from Manaf:

Three years ago, at the outbreak of the Syrian civil war, my family was torn apart. Being an activist and joining protests I had to flee to Jordan to reach safety, and I haven’t seen my family since. My family is still in Syria and now they are in serious danger. My mother, two sisters, brother, my brother’s wife and my 3 year old nephew no longer have there home or a safe place to stay. Our home in the Barzeh neighborhood of Damascus where they had been living for the past 30 years was destroyed just 2 weeks ago and they are still struggling to find shelter and basic necessities.

With a few thousand dollars, my family can flee Syria and safely meet my extended family that is living in Turkey. Because of the current fighting and rugged terrain, the safest route is from Damascus towards Lebanon and then continuing to Turkey. Being able to take this safe route means my family will face less risk of violence and crime. Once in Turkey my family will have a secure place to live, support one another, and recover from the effects of the civil war.

I have a mini-goal of reaching $2,000 by this Friday. This money will cover most of my family’s transportation costs out of the Barzeh neighborhood and across the border into Lebanon. Help me raise 2k in three days!

Every bit helps! If you don’t have the funds to contribute it would be great if you could share this with family and friends - and help promote my campaign to provide safety for my family.

Sincerely -

Manaf

Background on the Syrian crisis:

Beginning in March of 2011 the Syrian civil war has uprooted 6.5 million people and created 2.7 million refugees. Human rights groups estimate the conflict has claimed the lives of over 160,000 people; many of these deaths are women and children. With continued instability and indiscriminate use of violence against civilians there is no resolution in sight. It is critical that we help Manaf’s family flee the violence in Syria and reach safety in neighboring Turkey, a country which is currently protecting and assisting over half a million Syrian refugees. Here is an overview of the conflict from CNN -

Thank you everyone for your love and support!
