This is our son Auguste. On April 28, he will turn 3 years old, which is the exact date he will undergo his first pre-operation appointment for an Auditory Brainstem Implant (ABI) at the Children's Hospital in Los Angeles.

You see, Auguste was born deaf. Sadly, his auditory nerve hadn't developed in my womb. He was officially diagnosed when he was a year and a half and, shortly after, underwent surgery to receive bilateral cochlear implants. Of course, because of the absence of the nerve, the implants gave no results... even after many months of hard work in audiology and speech therapy.

About 6 months ago, the delicate procedure that is the ABI was approved by the FDA in 4 States of the USA. Finding out about this, we contacted the appointed medical team in California. Back in September of 2013, we travelled from Montreal to LA with Auguste to meet up with the entire team and gather information about the surgery; by then, we weren't sure we wanted our son to undergo brain surgery... But our encounters were conclusive and we decided to register our son as a research patient. Now, we just had to wait and see if he was chosen as one of the lucky patients who would benefit from an ABI surgery.
A few days ago, after 6 months that seemed like eternity to us, we received the incredible news: Auguste has been chosen as the first patient to be part of the research and on May 6th, he will undergo the brain surgery which could change his life and ours forever!

This being said, we are from Montreal, Canada. We have 2 other children to take care of. In the next few months and years we will have to travel to LA back and forth many times (the research process requires a follow up every 3 months for the first year only). At the time of the surgery, we will have to stay in California for a minimum of 7 weeks. This will be very costly for our little family. We will sacrifice all that we can to give this wonderful opportunity to our son. It's the least we can do for him. Still, we could use a hand... Some help... To make sure that we are able to continue to offer all of our children a good, healthy and balanced life, filled with great learning opportunities.

If you could help and support Auguste in any sort of way,
we would eternally be grateful to you.

Thank you.
